Languages are not a compulsory subject in maintained schools at KS1 but are compulsory in KS2 and KS3. Teaching may be of any modern or ancient foreign language, and should ‘lay the foundations’ for foreign language learning at KS3. The most successful language teaching is where it is integrated across the curriculum. There is no specific requirement with regard to the amount of time that should be spent on foreign language teaching.

SPANISH AT QUEENSWAY

At Queensway, we recognise that learning a modern foreign language is a statutory entitlement for all pupils during their time in Key Stage 2 and teachers deliver an inclusive, cross-curricular approach to the teaching and learning of Spanish. As a school, we are committed to the principle that learning another language helps foster a curiosity and deeper understanding of other cultures. Each class is allocated 30 minutes a week to teach and deliver the Spanish curriculum. A range of teaching techniques are used to encourage children to engage actively in learning Spanish language, these include games, role-play, action songs and rhymes and videos.
