Relationships and Sex Education is compulsory in England. You can read the statutory guidance for schools by clicking here. Our school policy has been developed in consultation with all stakeholders and can be found by clicking here, or in the policy page of our website.
We understand that the RSE policy is a very lengthy document but that parents may have some questions about what their child will be learning and how this will be taught in school. To make this information easily accessible we have identified some frequently asked questions and responses below. We hope you find everything you need here but if you need any further information please do contact us.
Relationships and sex education (RSE) is learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health.
From September 2020, all primary children must be taught Relationships and Health Education. Sex education is advised, but optional.
Relationships education: (must be taught)

Sex Education (Optional but Queensway is continuing to teach it)
All schools must consult with all stakeholders about any additional content taught, such as sex education by Summer 2021. This consultation must then guide the school's RSE policy.

If your child is in Year 4 or above, you class teacher will invite you to an information evening, prior to teaching puberty or sex education content.

- Agreed class rules for all discussions
- Content is depersonalised – generic examples and no personal stories
- Agreed resources, vocabulary and schemes are used
- Questions are answered in line with year group content. If questions are asked beyond this, then the teacher can pass on this question to parents
- Pupils are given opportunities to ask questions anonymously
- Pupils are taught in mixed gender groups, other than specific lessons on the practicalities of puberty
- Everyone speaks with and is treated with respect
All content until Year 6 is statutory (no right to withdraw).
In Year 6, the following content is statutory (no right to withdraw)
- Becoming men and women
- Good relationships
- Being a parent
- Female genital mutilation
The following content in Year 6 is not statutory (right to withdraw):
- Sexual relationships
- Conception and pregnancy
- Your questions answered
- HIV transmission

Parents wishing to withdraw their child should speak to the headteacher.

For puberty or sex education content, you will be contacted in advance and invited to attend a meeting where the resources and content to be taught will be shared. You will also have an opportunity to ask any questions.
Following best practice from the PSHE association, RSE content is taught in line with biological age.
Pupils with SEND will be supported to access their year group's content with sensitivity to their developmental stage and learning needs.
To ensure that learning matches biological age, content is broken down into smaller steps, revisited throughout the year and adapted as necessary.
In line with the Equality Act 2010, we ensure that:
- Teaching is inclusive of all sexual orientations and identities
- Good relationships between pupils are fostered and all prejudice is tackled
- Issues of sexual orientation and identity are approached sensitively
- Appropriate questions are answered and support is provided
- There is no assumption that all intimate relationships are between members of the opposite sex
- We include people who are LGBTQ+ in stories, scenarios and role-plays
- We explore topics from others' points of view in a variety of ways
- Our teaching is sensitive to all needs and age appropriate
